Dr. Sameer Pratap Sawant

Dr. Sameer P Sawant is a Mumbai-based Ophthalmologist specialising in vitreo-retinal surgery. His areas of special interest include treatment of diabetic retinopathy and retinal detachments. He can be consulted at the Samarth Eye Clinic (Santacruz East) on all days except Sundays.

Dr. Sameer Sawant obtained the MS postgraduate degree in Ophthalmology from MR Medical College in Gulbarga in November 2004, securing the sixth rank in the state. He simultaneously completed a Basic Course in Ophthalmic Diagnostics at LVPEI-Zeiss Academy for Advanced Ophthalmic Education, at LV Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad. Dr. Sawant also successfully cleared the Diplomate of National Board (DNB) examination, New Delhi, in 2005. In the initial stages of his career, he worked as resident doctor at the KBHB Eye Hospital, Parel, Mumbai, in 2005-06, where he performed more than 500 ophthalmic surgeries. In April 2006, he began a Vitreo-Retinal Fellowship at Ganapati Netralaya in Jalna, a multi-specialty eye institute, which is a technologically well-equipped clinical centre designed along the lines of the finest eye hospitals in the world. It was here that he underwent rigorous training as a vitreo-retinal surgeon, ably guided by nationally renowned surgeons.

Besides his professional commitments, Dr. Sameer Sawant finds time to pursue varied humanitarian and social activities. He rendered voluntary services and performed multiple eye surgeries aboard the Lifeline Express, promoted by UNDP, UNICEF and WHO in association with the Government of India in May/June 2005. Earlier in 2002, he offered voluntary service to the Bhuj earthquake victims, alongside the Indian Air Force. He has also participated in a disability reduction project under the aegis of the Impact India Foundation. Further, he has been involved in conducting and managing numerous ophthalmic diagnostic and surgical camps in Maharashtra and Karnataka. He is also inclined towards keeping fit and being creative, as he regularly participates in 21-kilometre half marathons, and is an avid photographer as well.
